Leather industry is the 2nd  highest foreign  currency earning sector in Bangladesh. It's position is next to the garments in the country. That's why government declared it as a priority sector. Though it has huge opportunity as Chine giving up this sector, we can't utilize this opportunity because of some  limitations. 
The first tannery was set up in Bangladesh at Narayanganj near 1940s by a businessman named R.P shaha. Then the tanneries were shifted into Hazaribagh, Dhaka. 

Leather sector overview in short

  • 159 Tanneries in total which are recently moved to Hamayetpur, Savar from Hazaribagh.
  • 76% of Tanneries are export - oriented.
  • Total about 2,500 footwear makers in Dhaka. There are also some footwear maker outside Dhaka.
  • About 180,000 people are engaged in this sector. 
  • Annual supply of rawhides about 300 million Sq-ft.
  • About 15-18% used for domestic demand.
  • 80% finished leather exported
  • 95% output for export.
  • Export earnings as of Fy17 is $1.23 billion. Government declared Leather sector as " Product of the year " in 2017.
  • Govt. sets target to earn $5 billion by 2021.

This second largest foreign earning sector was shifted from Hazaribagh to Hamayetput, savar in 2017. The aim of this shift is to establish  a central Effluent Treatment plant (CETP ) to protect environment around the industry to attract foreign order. But the plant is not  working properly.
