What is Putrefaction and what are the Conditions to be putrefaction of hides/skins

Putrefaction: Putrefaction of hides and skins means decay of protein and other hide materials due to bacterial actions. In broad terms it may be viewed because the decomposition of proteins.

Conditions to be putrefaction of hides/skins:

  1. Concentration of proteolytic enzyme of the system
  2. Ratio  of protein and enzyme
  3. Content of protein
  4. Toxic materials present in the hides/skins
  5. Temperature of the system
  6. pH of the system
  7. Moisture Content
Preservation: Preservation is the process to protect hides/skins from putrefaction.

Deliming

After liming the unhaired and fleshed hides and skins, known as pelt, are taken for the next operation to remove lime and other alkalies from the pelt, is known as deliming.
on the other hand, deliming is gradual neutralization of the limed hide by washing the pelt in paddle or drum with weakly acidic chemical like mostly by ammonium salts or by organic acid, acid salts etc.
by this process limed pelts are delimed.

objectives of deliming

  • To remove the lime and other alkali from the limed pelts.
  • To produce good quality leather.
  • To reduce swelling and plumping.
  • To reduce the pH range of the limed pelts from (12.5 - 13.0) to ( 8.2 - 8.4 )
