Cut-ability of leather: The cut-ability of leather is defined as the usable area of the leather for cutting the shoe upper or lining without any defect on the cut piece i.e. without the defective area of the leather.
  • It is essential to assess the cuttability of leather in each shipment as the leather sorting by the vendor may not have been done according to the standard and consistency required by the vendee.
  • Select by random, 10-15 leather of each leather article in the shipment for spot-check inspection. The same leather as in the sample for area measurement can be used the sample size may vary.
  • Select the defective areas of the leather by putting circle using silver marker and measure the defective areas and total area of the skin using one square foot transparent plastic grid divided into 1/100 sq.foot squares or using machine.
  • The cuttability co-efficient is the ratio between the measurements of the cuttable or usable area and the total area of the leather.
  • Cuttability Coefficient, F = (B-C)/B
  •  Where, B is the total defective area in the sample, as measured by the vendee.
Net Coefficient of leather:
Net coefficient of leather is the product of the area discrepancy coefficient and the cuttability coefficient of the leather.
  • By calculating both the area discrepancy and the cuttability coefficient, the quantitative information about the received leather quality can be obtained.
  • For concise information, the net coefficient will have to be calculated.
  • Net Coefficient, G= E×F
  •  Where, E= Area Discrepancy Coefficient of the sample and
F= Cuttability Coefficient of the sample.
