Area Discrepancy:
  • The Area Discrepancy of leather is the difference between the measurements of the vendor(seller) and the vendee(Buyer).
  •  Leather received may be larger or smaller than the area stated by the vendor.
  • Therefore, it is of utmost important to check the area discrepancy, as part of incoming leather inspection.
  • 5% area discrepancy is internationally accepted in leather trade.
  •  The area discrepancies of both shoe upper and lining leather are measured by random sampling process.
  • 5-15 leathers of each article in the shipment are selected for spot check inspection and the area of each leather is measured by using large transparent plastic grid which is divided into 100 squares of 1 square foot each.
  • Measuring is done by counting the squares.
  • The area of leather is also measured by a scanner, planimeter or other suitable leather measuring machine.

Area Discrepancy coefficient:
  •  The area discrepancy co-efficient is the ratio between the measurements of the vendor (seller) and the vendee (buyer).
  • Area Discrepancy Coefficient, E= B/A
Where,
A= Total area of leather in the sample as shorted by the vendor,
B= Total area f the leather in the sample as measured by the vendee.
  • If the area of leather stated by the vendor 100 sft. And the area of that leather after measuring by the vendee is 97 sft.
Area discrepancy = 100- 97 = 3%
Area Discrepancy Coefficient, E= B/A= 97/100= 0.97
