The term shoe construction means the attachment of the lasted shoe upper with sole.
Basic types of shoe construction:
Generally there are two basic types of shoe construction:
- Direct Construction
- Indirect Construction
1. Direct shoe construction:
Direct shoe construction is a construction in which shoe is constructed of directly which means that the upper is directly attached to the sole.Merits:
- Easy to make.
- Less time required.
- Less skilled person is required to carry out the operation.
- High quality with low price.
- High productivity.
- Less longevity
- Less elegant
- Bottom is not repairable.
- Can't be versatile.
- Not luxurious.
- Can't create high fashionable shoe.
Direct construction can be divided in many process. they are:
- Cemented construction
- Moulded construction
- Californian slep lasted construction
- String lasted construction
- Strobel construction
- Sewon construction

2. Indirect shoe construction:
Indirect shoe construction refers to the shoe construction in which the upper is attached with the sole indirectly which means the upper is attached with sole via other material such as welt, midsole & rib. In Indirect construction, soles are attached to the welt, rib or runner which is itself attached to the lasted up.

- Highly fashionabl
- More elegant
- High longevity
- Damage can be recovered
- Difficult to make
- Highly skilled person need to carry out the process.
- Costly process
- Time consuming process
- Less productivity.
Types of Indirect shoe construction:
Indirect construction can be divided in many process. They are :- Welted construction
- Veldtschoen construction
- Indirect sewn shoe construction
- Indirect stitch down construction
